In the late 19th century, Andrew Carnegie of the United States is regarded as the first representative case; afterward, Alfred Krupp of Germany, Inayama Takeshi of Japan, and Park Tae-joon of Korea have been called by the same title. They share the characteristic not of mere wealthy individuals but of "architects of industrialization" who vertically integrated steelmaking technology, logistics, and raw material supply chains and laid the foundation for forward industries such as railroads, shipbuilding, construction, and automobiles.

Origin of the Title "Steel King"

The expression "Steel King" began as a nickname created by popular media. Steel is an intermediate good that forms the framework of modern industry, and its production volume itself was regarded as an indicator of national power. Therefore, when a single company held a double-digit or greater share of a given country's crude steel production, the modifier "king" was naturally attached. The title is not hereditary, and it is repeatedly granted and revoked according to market dominance, technological innovation, and the scale of job creation.

Andrew Carnegie and the American Steel Age

Carnegie, a Scottish immigrant, introduced the Bessemer converter process in the 1870s and founded Carnegie Steel Company, capturing a substantial portion of U.S. crude steel production in the 1890s. Through a vertical integration strategy of directly owning mines, railroads, and ships, and through price competitiveness achieved by cost reduction, he absorbed competitors; in 1901, when J.P. Morgan acquired it to establish U.S. Steel, the world's first billion-dollar company was born. Later, Carnegie donated most of his fortune to libraries and educational institutions, creating a model for philanthropy.

Steel Empires of Europe and Japan

The Krupp family of Germany's Ruhr region produced steel materials for cannons, rails, and locomotives, growing into Europe's largest steel company by the late 19th century. In Japan, Nippon Steel (Shin-Nippon Seitetsu), originating from the state-run Yawata Steel Works in 1901, grew under state leadership; during the postwar high-growth period, Chairman Inayama Takeshi, under the slogan "Iron is the nation (鐵は國家)," supplied steel materials to the automobile and shipbuilding industries and raised Japan to the world's top steel power.

Korea's Steel King and POSCO

Korea's representative steel king is Park Tae-joon, founder of POSCO. In 1968 he led the construction of an integrated steel mill, and in 1973 lit the No. 1 blast furnace at Pohang Steelworks; later he additionally built Gwangyang Steelworks, making Korea a country in the upper ranks of world crude steel production. Park Tae-joon emphasized the management philosophy of "steel manufacturing for national service (製鐵報國)" and the principle of breaking through with technology and human resources in a country without resources. POSCO underwent privatization in the 1990s and currently transitioned to a POSCO Holdings system, expanding its business into non-steel sectors such as secondary battery materials.

China's Rise and the Shift of Power

Since the 2000s, as China's Baowu Steel, Ansteel, and Hegang Group took the world's No. 1 spot in crude steel production through large-scale mergers, the center of gravity of the steel king moved from the United States and Japan to China. China's share of world crude steel production has exceeded half, and this acts as a major variable in iron ore and coking coal prices, shipping freight rates, and further international trade disputes.

Legacy and Criticism of the Steel Kings

While steel kings contributed to large-scale employment, regional economic formation, and infrastructure construction, they have also been criticized for suppressing labor unions, environmental pollution, and large greenhouse gas emissions. Carnegie's Homestead Strike (1892), Krupp's wartime munitions cooperation, and air pollution problems in steel cities around the world are frequently cited as the dark side of industrialization.

Latest Trends

As of 2024–2025, the steel industry has entered an entirely new axis of competition: "decarbonization." As the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) enters the full implementation stage, exporting companies are faced with the situation of having to prove the embedded carbon content in their products. In response, POSCO began construction of a hydrogen reduction steelmaking (HyREX) demonstration plant in Pohang, aiming for commercialization by 2030, and Nippon Steel is also pursuing both its COURSE50 technology, which recycles CO2 for iron ore reduction, and a shift to electric furnaces. China is continuing its policy of raising the share of low-carbon crude steel production while maintaining a production-cut stance in 2025 as well.

In addition, since 2024, as U.S. and EU steel safeguard and anti-dumping measures have strengthened, global supply chains are being reorganized. The slowdown in demand from forward industries such as automobiles, shipbuilding, and construction, combined with China's real estate crisis, has increased steel price volatility; in response, major companies are simultaneously pursuing a portfolio shift centered on high-value-added steel grades (automotive steel sheets, electrical steel sheets, thick plates) and investments in secondary battery value chains such as secondary battery materials, lithium, and nickel. Evaluations suggest that the title "Steel King" is now likely to move not to the company with the largest production volume but to a company that takes the lead in low-carbon and high-value-added technologies.
