Overview

Techball (테크볼) is a collective term for a category of sports tech (Sports Tech) equipment that combines advanced technologies such as sensors, wireless communication, and light-emitting elements into balls and game equipment, as well as a convergence sport played using such equipment. Its distinguishing feature is that it goes beyond a simple exercise tool by collecting quantitative data such as spin rate, speed, trajectory, and impact force in real time, connecting this to training and tactical analysis, broadcasting, rehabilitation, and education. Recently, with the combination of artificial intelligence and on-device inference technology, it is rapidly expanding as a personalized coaching tool.

Definition and Concept

Traditional sports equipment consisted entirely of physical specifications such as size, weight, and material. Techball adds a data layer to this. Sensors mounted inside or on the surface of the ball measure all physical quantities generated during play and transmit them to smartphones, tablets, or coach dashboards via short-range wireless communication such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), UWB, and RFID. Users can check shooting speed, spin rate, impact point, movement trajectory, and more through numbers and graphs.

  • Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU): Combines an accelerometer and a gyroscope to estimate the ball's rotation and movement.
  • Pressure and vibration sensors: Detect the impact location and intensity during a kick or dribble.

  • Light-emitting module: The ball itself shines with LEDs, enabling play even in dark environments, and changes in color express rules and status.
  • Computer vision: Combined with stadium cameras, it tracks the ball's three-dimensional position at the millimeter level.

Types

1. Smart ball: A form in which sensors are embedded in balls of existing sports such as soccer balls, basketballs, baseballs, and tennis balls. It is widely used to measure shooting power in soccer, analyze shooting arc in basketball, and measure pitch type and spin rate in baseball.

2. LED Techball: A team-sport-type event using a light-emitting ball, in which modified games are operated in indoor gyms or outdoors at night with scoring methods that vary according to color rules.

3. Ball for robot soccer: A specially designed ball used in RoboCup and similar events that helps robots recognize the ball's position through infrared reflection or wireless beacons.

4. Physical AI training ball: Combined with humanoid robots, it is also used as a data collection tool for robots to learn ball-handling abilities.

Fields of Application

Professional clubs use Techball data for set-piece tactical design and injury prevention. In recreational sports, it is used as a gamification element for posture correction and motivation. In the medical and rehabilitation field, it is applied as a therapeutic tool to measure hand grip strength and coordination, and in school physical education, it is drawing attention as a convergence class material that combines coding and data literacy. In broadcast coverage, it enhances the viewing experience with real-time trajectory graphics and shooting speed displays.

Limitations and Discussion

Accuracy verification, lack of data standardization, high unit cost, and battery and durability issues are cited as representative limitations. In addition, because it may conflict with official ball specifications, separate regulatory adjustments are needed for introduction into official competitions.

Latest Trends

Since 2024, the Techball market has been dividing into two directions. The first is the embedding of on-device AI. Ultra-low-latency products that instantly judge posture and trajectory inside the ball without a round trip to the cloud are increasing, and services in which generative AI converts training data into natural-language coaching have also appeared. The second is integration with Physical AI. As RoboCup and humanoid leagues expand, Techball has established itself as a standard benchmark for evaluating robots' manipulation abilities, and in 2025, a pilot league in which humanoids play actual soccer games became a hot topic. In Korea as well, with the sports ICT convergence project and policies to smarten local sports facilities, the adoption of Techball-based training systems has increased, and attempts at online league formats combined with e-sports platforms continue. In international competition broadcasting, ultra-precise tracking technology is now solidifying as a standard, not an option.
