"The World of the Married" (Korean: 부부의 세계) is a 16-episode drama that aired on JTBC from March 27 to May 16, 2020, and is a remake of the BBC drama "Doctor Foster." It densely depicts the catastrophe that unfolds as a marital relationship that seemed solid through love and trust cracks due to betrayal and infidelity. At the time of broadcast, it recorded the highest viewership rating in cable channel drama history, caused a social syndrome, and was evaluated as actor Kim Hee-ae's life-defining performance.

Production Background

The original BBC's "Doctor Foster" aired in the UK in 2015 and caused a great sensation; it tells the story of a doctor who discovers her husband's infidelity and takes revenge. The Korean version was directed by Mo Wan-il, and Joo Hyun wrote the screenplay. It was evaluated as maintaining the framework of the original while reinterpreting it by adding emotional details and class/family narratives suited to Korean sensibilities.

Plot

Ji Sun-woo (Kim Hee-ae), a doctor, appears as a successful hospital vice director and a person who has built a perfect family. However, when she learns that her husband Lee Tae-oh (Park Hae-joon) is having an affair with a young woman, Yeo Da-kyung (Han So-hee), her life begins to collapse. Carrying anger and wounds over the betrayal, Ji Sun-woo unfolds a sharp revenge play against her husband, his affair partner, and those around them. Its characteristic is not simply a cathartic punishment, but a close examination of the psychology of the characters who are themselves hurt and broken during the process of revenge.

This was the highest viewership rating in cable drama history at the time, surpassing "SKY Castle."
