Time Deposit
Overview
A time deposit (定期預金, Time Deposit) is a savings product in which a fixed amount of money is deposited with a financial institution for an agreed period, and upon maturity, the principal along with the agreed interest is paid. It is the most basic and common type of bank deposit, classified as a safe asset with virtually no risk of principal loss, as it is protected up to 50 million won per person (as of 2025) under the Depositor Protection Act. Generally, longer deposit periods and larger deposit amounts receive higher interest rates, and both individuals and corporations can subscribe.

1. Characteristics of Time Deposits
- Fixed Maturity: If the deposit is withdrawn early before the agreed period (typically 1 month to 5 years), an early withdrawal interest rate lower than the contracted rate applies.
- Fixed Interest Rate: There are variable-rate and fixed-rate types; for fixed-rate types, the interest rate at the time of subscription is maintained until maturity.
- Depositor Protection: Under the Depositor Protection Act, up to 50 million won per person per bank (as of 2025) is protected, including both principal and interest.
- Renewal Option: Automatic renewal (rollover) can be selected at maturity, applying the interest rate at that time.
- Taxes: Interest income tax (15.4%, as of 2025) is withheld at source, and some products offer tax exemption benefits.
2. Types of Time Deposits
- Fixed-Rate Time Deposit: The interest rate at subscription is fixed until maturity, with no risk of rate fluctuation.
- Variable-Rate Time Deposit: The interest rate fluctuates in line with market rates (e.g., CD rate, COFIX).
- Compound Interest Time Deposit: Interest is reinvested into the principal, allowing for compound interest effects.
- Simple Interest Time Deposit: Interest accrues only on the principal and is paid in a lump sum at maturity.
- Tax-Exempt Time Deposit: Under the Restriction of Special Taxation Act, interest income tax is exempted if certain conditions (e.g., long-term housing savings) are met.
- Youth/Housewife Exclusive Time Deposit: Products offering preferential interest rates for specific groups.
3. Subscription Procedure for Time Deposits
1. Choose a Bank: Compare interest rates, maturities, and additional services (e.g., automatic renewal, early withdrawal conditions).
2. Select a Product: Choose a maturity that matches your fund plan (e.g., use after 1 year, use after 3 years).
3. Subscribe: Subscribe via bank visit, internet banking, or mobile banking, meeting the minimum deposit amount (usually 10,000 to 100,000 won).
4. Maturity Handling: At maturity, choose automatic renewal, receive principal + interest, or switch to another product.
4. Advantages and Disadvantages of Time Deposits
Advantages:
- High safety due to principal guarantee and depositor protection.
- Predictable returns based on deposit period and amount.
- Simple subscription process accessible to anyone.
Disadvantages:
- Real returns may be low considering inflation.
- Early withdrawal incurs a lower interest rate than the contracted rate, potentially causing losses.
- Returns are generally lower compared to other investment products (stocks, funds).
5. Comparison with Other Deposit Products
- Installment Savings: Involves depositing a fixed amount monthly; time deposits involve a lump sum deposit.
- Free Savings: Allows flexible deposit timing and amounts; time deposits have fixed maturity and amount.
- MMF (Money Market Fund): A short-term financial product with higher liquidity than time deposits but no principal guarantee.
- CD (Certificate of Deposit): A tradable deposit certificate with higher liquidity than time deposits.
Recent Trends
From 2024 to 2025, the Korean time deposit market has undergone the following changes:
- Interest Rate Cut Trend: As the Bank of Korea lowered the base rate from the second half of 2024 (2.75% as of February 2025), time deposit rates have also declined. From 4-5% per annum in late 2023, rates fell to the low-to-mid 3% range in early 2025.
- Preference for Short-Term Products: With expected rate cuts, preference for short-term (6 months to 1 year) time deposits over long-term (2 years or more) has increased.
- Growth of Internet-Only Banks: KakaoBank, K Bank, and Toss Bank are expanding market share with higher rates and convenient mobile subscriptions. Notably, Toss Bank launched a special time deposit at 3.5% per annum in 2024, gaining significant popularity.
- Strengthened Non-Face-to-Face Channels: Traditional banks are also launching mobile-exclusive time deposit products and offering preferential rates.
- Expanded Tax Benefits: From 2025, the tax-exempt time deposit limit for youth (ages 19-34) has been expanded from 10 million won to 20 million won.
- ESG-Linked Products: With growing interest in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investment, time deposit products investing in ESG-excellent companies have emerged.
