Vogue
Overview
Vogue is the world's most influential fashion and lifestyle magazine, founded in the United States in 1892. Published by Condé Nast, it is known as the "bible of the fashion world," not merely conveying fashion trends but setting industry standards and creating the authority of designers, models, and brands. It currently publishes local editions in more than 30 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Japan, and Korea, and has evolved into a global media platform that has expanded into digital, video, and event businesses.
History and Founding Background
Vogue was founded in 1892 by Arthur Turnure in New York as a weekly society newspaper. In its early years it was closer to a journal covering the etiquette, culture, and dress of the upper class, but it converted into a fashion magazine when Condé Nast acquired it in 1909. After the 1930s, it established a photography-centered editorial system and acquired the visual identity it has today.
Anna Wintour and Modern Vogue
After Anna Wintour became editor-in-chief in 1988, Vogue reached a decisive turning point. She placed celebrities prominently on the cover, combined high fashion with popular culture, and introduced an editorial strategy linking fashion to art, politics, and social issues. This model became the standard editorial grammar of local editions around the world, and in 2020 Wintour was promoted to Condé Nast global editorial director and Vogue global editorial director, overseeing the direction of all editions.
The September Issue and the Met Gala
Vogue's September issue is considered the most important issue of the year in the fashion world. New-season collections and advertising are concentrated in it, and a single issue often exceeds twice the length of a regular issue. In addition, the Met Gala, hosted by Vogue, is a fundraising event for The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York every May, and is the largest event of its kind, comparable to an awards ceremony, drawing the entire global entertainment and fashion worlds. The dress code and staging matching the theme become a talking point in media and social networks around the world for weeks.
Vogue Korea
Vogue Korea was founded in 1996 and has established itself as a representative media outlet of Korean fashion media. It has served as a gateway connecting K-fashion and K-culture to the international stage, putting domestic designers and brands, actors, and idols on its covers and in features. Recently, it has been operated as a comprehensive content platform that transcends the boundaries of a magazine through digital-only content, a YouTube channel, and brand collaboration projects.
Industry Status
Vogue is not simply a media outlet but an arena of power. Being selected as a cover model alone changes one's public standing, and having a particular designer's collection featured in its pages directly leads to an increase in brand value. Its advertising pages are a core marketing channel for luxury brands, and personnel appointments of editors-in-chief and editors become news across the entire industry.
Recent Trends
In 2024–2025, Vogue is shifting its center of gravity from a print-centered medium to a "digital-first" platform. First, the integration of the global editorial system is accelerating, reducing the distinctiveness of each country's edition and increasing common content and globally planned features. Second, short-form video such as TikTok and Instagram Reels and influencer collaborations have become major acquisition channels, and Vogue is attempting a generational shift through its own video and social channels. Third, social agendas such as sustainability, inclusivity, and diversity are being directly reflected in editorial direction, and the use of models of diverse body types and backgrounds and the spotlighting of eco-friendly material brands are increasing. Fourth, AI-based content production, personalized recommendations, and commerce integration are being experimented with, and a characteristic is the blurring of boundaries between magazine advertising and e-commerce. However, tension between traditional authority and commerciality, and newsroom restructuring due to the contraction of print media, remain ongoing subjects of debate.
