Overview
Westinghouse is a brand that originated from the electric power and electrical equipment company founded in 1886 by American inventor and entrepreneur George Westinghouse, and today it mainly refers to Westinghouse Electric Company, an American company specializing in nuclear power generation equipment. It is famous for leading the commercialization of alternating current (AC) power systems and winning the so-called "War of the Currents" against Thomas Edison's direct current (DC) camp. Today, it has established itself as a global nuclear power company supplying core reactor technology and fuel to nuclear power plants around the world.

Corporate Origins and the War of the Currents
George Westinghouse achieved business success by inventing the railway air brake and then founded Westinghouse Electric Company in 1886. He secured Nikola Tesla's AC induction motor patents and supplied an AC power system to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, demonstrating the superiority of AC. In 1895, with the installation of an AC power generation system at the Niagara Falls hydroelectric plant, he effectively defeated the DC camp and established the standard for the modern power grid.
Business Diversification and Split
In the 20th century, Westinghouse expanded into home appliances, radio broadcasting, defense, and power equipment, growing into a comprehensive electric company representing the United States. However, amid management difficulties and restructuring, its business divisions were separated and sold off several times; the broadcasting division moved to CBS, and the home appliance brand was transferred to various companies. Today, the "Westinghouse" brand is also used under license in home appliances, lighting, and other fields.
Nuclear Power Business
Currently, Westinghouse's core is its nuclear power division. Its representative reactor models include the pressurized water reactor (PWR)-based AP1000, the small modular reactor (SMR) AP300, and the eVinci microreactor. It also supplies fuel rods and maintenance and services for nuclear power plants worldwide, and participates in nuclear power projects in countries such as the Czech Republic, Poland, and Ukraine. After Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2018, it was reorganized through acquisition by Canada's Brookfield Asset Management, and its business has since re-expanded with the recovery of the nuclear power market.

Latest Trends
In 2024–2025, as power demand surges due to AI data centers and electrification, nuclear power is drawing attention again. Westinghouse secured a track record in new nuclear construction with the commercial operation of Vogtle Units 3 and 4 (AP1000) in Georgia, USA, and is fiercely competing with Russian and French camps in bidding for nuclear projects in Eastern Europe, including Poland and the Czech Republic. In addition, as Big Tech such as Microsoft and Google increase SMR power purchase agreements, the SMR and microreactor market is growing rapidly, and Westinghouse is accelerating the commercialization of the AP300 and eVinci. Meanwhile, the U.S. government's nuclear promotion policy and carbon neutrality stance are creating a favorable business environment for Westinghouse, but risks of construction cost overruns and schedule delays remain challenges.
