Early Life and Youth Career
Saliba was born in Bondy, in the Île-de-France region of France. His parents are immigrants from Nigeria, and he showed talent in football from an early age. He began playing football at age six with AS Bondy, where Kylian Mbappé also spent his youth. He later moved to ASF Le Blanc-Mesnil before joining the Saint-Étienne youth academy in 2016.
Saint-Étienne Period (2018–2019)
In May 2018, he signed his first professional contract with Saint-Étienne. During the 2018–19 Ligue 1 season, he made 16 appearances and earned recognition for his potential, notably being named Ligue 1 Young Player of the Month in January 2019. His performances attracted interest from major European clubs.
Arsenal Transfer and Loan Spells (2019–2022)
In July 2019, Arsenal FC signed Saliba for a fee of £27 million (approximately 45 billion KRW) and immediately loaned him back to Saint-Étienne for one season. He joined Arsenal ahead of the 2020–21 season but failed to gain the trust of manager Mikel Arteta and did not secure playing time. Consequently, in January 2021, he was loaned to Nice, where he made 20 appearances. In the 2021–22 season, he was loaned to Marseille, where he had a stellar campaign, being named to the Ligue 1 Team of the Year and fully unleashing his potential.
Breakthrough as a Starter at Arsenal (2022–Present)
Ahead of the 2022–23 season, Saliba returned to Arsenal and impressed in pre-season matches, winning the starting spot. Alongside Gabriel Magalhães, he formed a central defensive partnership that completely transformed Arsenal's defense. He helped lead the team to an unbeaten run of 27 games early in the 2022–23 season, but a back injury in March sidelined him for the remainder of the season, disrupting the team's title challenge.
In the 2023–24 season, he fully returned, starting 37 of 38 league matches and playing a key role in the team's league-best defensive record (29 goals conceded) and Premier League-leading clean sheets (18). His composure, aerial dominance (over 70% aerial duel success rate), and accurate passing from the back (over 90% pass completion rate) were crucial to Arsenal finishing second in the league. In the 2024–25 season, he has continued his consistent performances, contributing to Arsenal's Premier League title challenge and their run to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
International Career
Saliba progressed through France's youth national teams and made his senior debut in a friendly against Ivory Coast in March 2022. He was included in the final squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, helping the team reach the final and finish as runners-up. At UEFA Euro 2024, he played as a starting defender, leading France to the semi-finals. He has now established himself as a key defender for the French national team alongside Dayot Upamecano.
Playing Style
Saliba is regarded as a defender with all the attributes required in modern football. Despite his height of 192 cm, he possesses remarkable speed and agility, allowing him to cover wide spaces like a full-back. He dominates aerial duels, easily cutting out opponents' long balls. Additionally, his build-up play from the back is excellent, using accurate long passes and through balls to initiate attacks. His defensive positioning and concentration are outstanding, and he is strong in one-on-one situations. His presence has elevated Arsenal's defensive line to a higher level, enabling the team to maintain a high line without losing stability.
Latest Developments
As of the 2024–25 season, Saliba is an undisputed starter for Arsenal. As of January 2025, he has made over 20 appearances in the Premier League, contributing to the team's second-best defensive record in the league (22 goals conceded). Notably, in December 2024, he delivered a decisive defensive performance in a 2–0 away win against Manchester City, earning the Man of the Match award. During the January 2025 transfer window, reports emerged that Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are interested in signing Saliba, but Arsenal has designated him as 'absolutely not for sale' and is expected to demand a transfer fee of over £100 million (approximately 170 billion KRW). Furthermore, he is widely tipped to be named to the PFA Team of the Year at the end of the 2024–25 season and is being mentioned as a candidate for the Ballon d'Or defender category.
