I added up my kid's academy fees and it comes to 1.2M won a month

Based on a 4th grader in elementary school:

  • English: 250k won
  • Math: 220k won
  • Taekwondo: 150k won
  • Piano: 180k won
  • Coding: 200k won
  • Essay Writing: 200k won

Total: 1.2M won. If you add vacation special courses, it goes up to 1.5M won.

Since we're a dual-income household, I tell myself there's no way around it, but I'm not sure whether this is actually helping my kid. How many hagwons do you all send your kids to?

Six in 4th grade seems like a bit much lol. Does the kid not say anything?

Well, that's a bit... I don't think coding and essay writing are very effective for a 4th grader. Most coding academies just have kids play with Scratch and call it a day, and much of what essay writing covers is already covered by reading. 120 isn't a small amount of money, so wouldn't it be better to weigh each one's effectiveness and sort it out? For reference, my kid is in 5th grade, and I only send them to three: English, math, and Taekwondo.

If you're a dual-income household, I really get that there's no way around it. We're dual-income too, and because our kid spends so much time home alone, it felt easier to send them to at least one academy. But six academies—including travel time—means the kid is basically out running around all day. Then on weekends, they're completely wiped out and can't do anything. We cut out all academies on Fridays. That way, at least on that day, our kid doesn't have to do anything.
