Experience
Overview
Experience (Korean: 체험; 體驗) refers not to merely receiving information but to an activity in which learners or participants directly undergo and feel a particular situation and internalize it. Unlike indirect experience gained by reading and listening, experience mobilizes the five senses and action and deeply intervenes in the formation of knowledge, emotions, and values; it has long been treated as an important concept in education and in the culture and arts. Recently, as virtual and augmented reality experiences combined with digital technology have spread, its scope has been rapidly expanding.

Experience in Education
Experience became a core axis of learner-centered education after John Dewey’s philosophy of “education as experience.” David Kolb’s experiential learning cycle explains learning through experience in four stages: concrete experience → reflective observation → abstract conceptualization → active experimentation. In Korea, since the 2000s, “hands-on learning” (체험학습) has been linked to the regular curriculum and institutionalized in forms such as creative experiential activities, the free semester system, and school trips and field learning.
Types of Experience
- Direct experience: Experience in actual environments such as field visits, volunteer work, and job practice
- Indirect experience: Experience in designed environments such as simulators and workshops at museums and science centers
- Virtual experience: Immersive experience through digital media such as VR, AR, and the metaverse
- Cultural experience: Sensory and emotional experiences such as traditional culture, crafts, cooking, and artistic creation
Effects of Experience
Experience has strengths in that it increases retention, strengthens problem-solving ability and self-efficacy, and motivates learning through emotional immersion. However, because systematic concept formation may be difficult through experience alone, educational effects are maximized when reflection and introspection processes are designed together.
Experience Economy and Experience Marketing
The concept of the “Experience Economy” proposed by Pine & Gilmore explains the phenomenon in which consumers value the experience they feel within a product or service more than the product or service itself. Companies form emotional bonds with consumers through experience marketing such as brand experience centers, pop-up stores, and participatory events.
Recent Trends
In 2024–2025, the convergence of experience with digital technology is accelerating. With the spread of XR devices such as Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest, immersive content experiences are expanding into education, culture, and medical training, and services that use generative AI to provide customized experience scenarios to individual learners have also appeared. In addition, in response to the climate crisis and regional extinction, nature and ecological experiences and local experiential tourism are drawing attention, and an experiential consumption trend of “consuming experiences,” centered on the MZ generation, is strengthening. In educational settings, digital-based experiential learning platforms and metaverse classrooms are being introduced on a pilot basis, and the need for systematic research on the design and evaluation of experiences is also growing.
