Hana Bank
Overview
Hana Bank (하나은행) is a core affiliate of Hana Financial Group and one of Korea’s four major commercial banks. It started as Korea Investment Finance in 1971, obtained a banking license in 1991, and changed its name to “Hana Bank.” It subsequently grew by absorbing and integrating Seoul Bank and Korea Exchange Bank in succession, and is regarded as a bank with traditional strengths in foreign exchange and international finance. Digital financial innovation centered on its mobile app “Hana 1Q” and expansion of its global network are key growth axes.
Key Details
History
- In 1971, Korea Investment Finance was established. Starting as a short-term finance company, it converted to a bank in 1991 and became “Hana Bank.”
- In the late 1990s, it acquired Chungcheong Bank and expanded its business base; in 2002, it merged with Seoul Bank, greatly expanding its assets and branch network.
- In 2005, with the launch of Hana Financial Group, it transitioned to a holding company system; in 2015 it absorbed and merged Korea Exchange Bank, and in 2016 it made a new start as integrated Hana Bank. In this process, foreign exchange specialists and international finance know-how were combined, reinforcing its image as a leading foreign exchange house.
Business Base and Business Structure
Personal finance (deposits, loans, cards, asset management), corporate finance (large enterprise and SME loans, investment finance), foreign exchange and international finance, and wealth management (WM) are core pillars. In particular, it is evaluated as having competitiveness in trade finance for import/export companies, exchange rate and derivatives hedging services, and overseas remittance and currency exchange services. Hana Bank also serves as a cash cow that accounts for a significant portion of the group’s profits within Hana Financial Group.
Digital Transformation
Centered on the mobile banking app “Hana 1Q,” it has integrated functions such as account inquiry, transfers, loans, investments, and insurance, and has expanded linkages with simple payments, open banking, and MyData. It introduced a digital service window that enables consultation and document submission through non-face-to-face channels, and is gradually applying generative AI-based consultation support and internal work automation. Foreign exchange-specialized digital services such as mobile overseas remittance and non-face-to-face foreign exchange services via video consultation are cited as differentiators.
Global Network
It has branches and local subsidiaries in major countries such as China, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, the United States, and Europe, and is pursuing expansion of retail and corporate finance through local subsidiaries. The share of global business is steadily increasing in line with the group-level strategy of “global P&L expansion.”
Sports and Cultural Marketing
It has participated as title sponsor of professional football K League 1 (Hana Bank K League 1), and is actively using sports marketing—including official sponsorship of the national football team and hosting and sponsoring golf tournaments—to raise brand awareness. It also carries out culture and arts sponsorship and youth financial support programs.
Latest Trends
In 2024–2025, the Korean banking sector is moving away from a structure centered on high-interest interest income and pursuing non-interest income expansion and cost efficiency; Hana Bank is also focusing on diversifying revenue in asset management, foreign exchange, and global sectors. As regulatory sanctions and compensation procedures related to sales of Hong Kong H-index-linked equity-linked securities (ELS) emerged as an issue across the banking sector, strengthening consumer protection systems and internal control has emerged as a major task. Growth strategies centered on mortgage loans are also being adjusted due to household loan total volume regulations and the expanded implementation of stress DSR. On the digital side, advancement of generative AI-based services, preparation of digital asset-related infrastructure, and expansion of platform partnerships are underway, and at the group level, entry into new businesses such as equity investment in a digital asset exchange operator is being pursued. In 2025, as interest income growth is expected to slow in a rate-cutting phase, expansion of non-interest income and overseas business performance are evaluated as key to results.
