Incheon Songdo Fire Station

Overview

Incheon Songdo Fire Station is a fire service institution under the Incheon Fire Headquarters responsible for fire prevention and suppression, rescue and emergency medical services, and life safety services, centered on the Songdo International Business District area of Yeonsu-gu, Incheon. Given Songdo's characteristics—where the International Business District, high-rise buildings, large-scale residential complexes, and research and educational facilities are concentrated—it focuses its capabilities on responding to high-rise fires and disasters on coastal reclaimed land. As a front-line institution for citizen safety, it is responsible for the entire disaster response process, from receiving 119 reports to on-site dispatch and follow-up safety management.

Establishment Background and History

Songdo International Business District is an international business-residential mixed new city created through sea reclamation beginning in the early 2000s, and its population and high-rise buildings grew rapidly in a short period. Previously, this area was operated under the jurisdiction of adjacent fire stations, but as apartment complexes, office towers, international schools, and convention and commercial facilities were built one after another, the need for a dedicated station was continuously raised. The Incheon Fire Headquarters established Songdo Fire Station to strengthen disaster response capabilities in the Songdo area and share the workload of existing stations, and afterward, organizational reorganization, personnel recruitment, and equipment reinforcement continued in stages. The detailed opening date and organizational size may vary according to administrative organizational restructuring.

Jurisdiction and Organization

Its jurisdiction centers on the Songdo-dong area of Yeonsu-gu and includes residential and business districts from Songdo 1-dong to Songdo 8-dong, the International Business District, the high-tech industrial complex, Campus Town, and commercial areas around Central Park. The organization consists of a chief and the Fire Administration Division, Preventive Safety Division, and Field Response Team, with rescue teams, emergency medical teams, and fire suppression personnel assigned as field response staff. It operates a system of 119 Safety Centers and 119 Regional Units by area to minimize dispatch distance and secure the golden time.

Main Duties

Its most core duties are fire suppression, lifesaving rescue, and transport of emergency patients. In addition, it carries out preventive administration such as completion inspections of firefighting facilities, inspections of specific firefighting objects, hazardous materials safety management, and safety management of multi-use businesses. Life safety dispatches such as beehive removal, elevator entrapment rescue, door opening, and safety confirmation also account for a considerable share. In addition, when a large-scale disaster occurs, it operates a joint response system with the Incheon Fire Headquarters, adjacent stations, and related agencies such as the police, military, and maritime police.

Equipment and Facilities

It is equipped with standard equipment such as pump trucks, water tank trucks, articulated ladder trucks and ladder trucks, chemical trucks, rescue trucks, and ambulances, and recently the introduction of advanced equipment such as firefighting drones, thermal imaging cameras, and personal safety equipment has been expanding. Due to its geographical characteristics adjacent to the coast, water rescue equipment and cooperation systems with the maritime police and air units also form an important part.

Regional Characteristics and Response Strategy

Songdo has many high-rise buildings, large underground parking lots, and glass curtain wall structures, making fire spread and smoke movement paths complex. In addition, due to the nature of reclaimed land, the ground and underground buried structures differ from ordinary land, and the pattern of fire spread may differ under the influence of sea breezes. Accordingly, it regularly conducts inspections of evacuation and fire prevention facilities in high-rise buildings, rooftop helicopter rescue training, and underground space suppression training. Because the proportion of foreign residents and visitors is high, it also operates a multilingual information and interpretation support system.

Recent Trends

As of 2024–2025, fire administration is showing a clear paradigm shift toward digital transformation and prevention. Early fire detection using IoT sensors and AI image analysis, fire detection and lifesaving searches using firefighting drones, and intelligentization of the 119 report reception and dispatch command system are spreading. In response to the increase in high-rise and complex buildings, joint fire drills with related agencies and education for private voluntary fire brigades have been strengthened, and after the conversion of firefighters to national civil servants, policies to protect health rights, such as improved treatment, strengthened expertise, and post-traumatic stress management, have also expanded. As damage from heat waves, heavy rain, and typhoons becomes more frequent due to climate change, the share of flood control and recovery support missions has grown, and citizen participation campaigns to yield the way to fire trucks and secure the golden time are also being continuously promoted. As the Songdo area is a region where population influx and development continue, demand for fire inspections and response plans for new facilities is expected to steadily increase.
