History and Changes

Morning Forum began during KBS’s reorganization of its morning time slot in the early 1990s. Since then, it has changed formats and segments several times, but it has maintained the broad framework of “weekday mornings, life-oriented stories, and songs.” In the 1990s and 2000s, local stories and lifestyle information and practical information such as health, cooking, and personal finance were central; after the 2010s, participatory singing segments and guest interviews were strengthened, settling into its current structure. At so-called “round number” milestones such as the 20th and 30th anniversaries, special broadcasts and record-setting episodes have drawn attention.

Representative Segments

1. Challenge! Dream Stage — The most widely known segment, a stage where ordinary participants compete in singing ability. Many participants centered on trot have appeared and produced topical figures, and not a few singers have become known through this segment.

2. Tuesday Guest Seat (화요초대석) — An interview segment inviting figures from politics, culture, and society to hear their life stories and current issues.

3. Vivid Talk: What If (생생토크 만약에) / Story-type Talk — A format that reconstructs viewer stories or has multiple performers converse, combining empathy and laughter.

4. Thursday Special Lecture · Panel Discussion — An information segment dealing with life-close topics such as health, family relationships, and personal finance.

5. In addition, stories about married couples and families, introductions of viewer stories from across the country, seasonal specials, and other items are rotated in the schedule.

Hosts and Cast

Morning Forum has long maintained a structure in which announcers and broadcasters alternate or co-host, rather than having a single host. Lee Geum-hee (이금희) is recognized as a representative host for a long period, and afterward KBS announcers and hosts from comedy and singing backgrounds took turns holding the microphone. For each segment, trot singers, comedians, veteran actors, and experts in various fields have participated as fixed or rotating panelists.

Popular Culture Significance

Morning Forum is symbolic in that it is perceived as the “rhythm of daily life” of terrestrial morning time slots itself. For older adults, it serves as a social network, and it is evaluated as having contributed to the popularization of trot and the formation of entertainment aimed at middle-aged and older viewers. On the other hand, criticisms have also been raised about differences in sentiment across generations, stereotypical subject matter, and sensational story composition.

Recent Trends

As of 2024–2025, Morning Forum still serves as a central axis of KBS 1TV’s weekday morning programming. Recently, with the increased distribution of clips through its official YouTube channel, not only viewers of the original broadcast but also younger people consuming highlight videos online are flowing in. A representative example is the spread online of videos featuring appearances on “Challenge! Dream Stage.” At the same time, the overall decline in viewership of terrestrial morning programs, production cost efficiency, generational change among hosts, and expansion of links with local broadcasting are being discussed as major tasks. How to reorganize the story and segment assets accumulated over more than 30 years to suit the digital and short-form environment is cited as a key topic in the mid-2020s.
