School

Overview

A school (Korean: 학교) is a formal educational institution established to provide students with systematic and organized education. More than a place that simply teaches knowledge and skills, a school is an important space for socialization that helps students form the values, attitudes, and social norms necessary to grow into members of society. In modern society, schools exist as compulsory education institutions in most countries and play a central role in individual development and social progress.

History of Schools

The institutionalization of education has developed alongside human civilization. In ancient civilizations, education was provided to a small elite, with institutions such as the Academy in ancient Greece and the Gukjagam in China. The origin of modern schools dates back to the 19th-century Industrial Revolution. Industrialization created a need for a large-scale educated workforce, leading to the establishment of a public education system in which the state assumed responsibility for education. This public education provided basic education ensuring that all citizens acquired foundational reading, writing, and arithmetic skills, and it remains an important legacy of modern schools.

Types of Schools

Schools are classified in various ways according to educational stage and purpose. By education level, they are divided into kindergartens (early childhood education), elementary schools (primary education), middle and high schools (secondary education), and universities (higher education). There are also schools with special purposes. For example, special schools provide education for students with disabilities, and there are vocational high schools and junior colleges for job training. Although specific titles and structures vary according to each country's educational system, in general schools are organized vertically by age and grade level, and then horizontally by field of specialization.

Purposes of School Education

The purposes of school education can be broadly summarized into three categories. First, the promotion of intellectual growth. Schools systematically transmit foundational concepts and knowledge in academic fields such as mathematics, science, language, and history. Second, socialization and the cultivation of democratic citizens. School is a place where students interact with peers and learn social rules and the value of cooperation. Third, supporting individuals to realize their potential. Teachers discover students' individual characteristics and aptitudes and provide educational support tailored to them. Recently, essential 21st-century competencies such as critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills have been emphasized.

Structure and Operation of Schools

A school is generally under the administration of educational authorities and operates according to the education policies of the national or local government. The basic organization of a school consists of a principal (or director) at the center, along with vice principals, teachers, and administrative staff. Teachers take charge of subject areas or classes, conduct lessons, and also provide guidance and counseling regarding student life. School operation includes curriculum design, academic schedule management, assessment, and student guidance. Recently, governance models that allow parents and local communities to participate in school operation have been spreading. Curricula are designed through a balance between national-level standards and school-level discretion.

Schools and Society

Schools have a bidirectional relationship with society, reflecting its demands and also driving social change. On the one hand, schools maintain social order and cultivate the talent needed by society. On the other hand, schools serve as a ladder of social mobility that helps resolve social inequality. However, there is also criticism that educational opportunities are not equally granted to all classes. Family background, regional gaps, and economic conditions have a significant impact on students' academic achievement and career choices. Accordingly, many countries operate free education, school meal programs, and additional support programs to enhance educational equity.

Latest Trends

During 2024 and 2025, schools are undergoing rapid digital transformation. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted the abrupt expansion of remote education, and blended learning that combines online and offline formats has since become established. In particular, the development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology is greatly changing the paradigm of school education. AI-based personalized tutoring, automated assessment and feedback systems, and adaptive learning platforms are being introduced, and these are of great help in matching students' individual learning progress. However, as reliance on AI increases, concerns about plagiarism, declining thinking ability, and data privacy violations are also being raised. Accordingly, many schools have begun to adopt AI literacy education as a required course. In addition, there is a trend away from standardized tests and examination-oriented education, which had long been consolidated, toward process-centered assessment and competency education for students' holistic growth. Furthermore, environmental education on climate change and international exchange programs for fostering global citizenship are also becoming increasingly important.
