Twitch
Overview
Twitch (트위치) is a global live streaming platform owned by Amazon. It started out centered on game broadcasting, but today it has established itself as a representative interactive media channel where real-time broadcasts of diverse genres take place, including talk, music, cooking, sports, and VTubers (버튜버). Its core competitive strength lies in a structure that lets viewers participate directly in a broadcast through real-time chat.
Key Details
History and Growth
In June 2011, it spun off from the gaming category of Justin.tv and launched as "Twitch.tv." Its founders include Emmett Shear, Justin Kan, Michael Seibel, and Kyle Vogt. In August 2014, Amazon acquired it for approximately $970 million, after which it grew explosively through AWS cloud infrastructure and integration with Amazon Prime (free subscription via Prime Gaming). During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020–2021, viewership hours reached an all-time high, serving as a decisive turning point for its popularization.
Platform Structure and Features
- Real-time chat, donations, Bits, subscriptions (Tiers 1–3)
- Participatory elements such as Channel Points, Predictions, and Hype Train
- Clips, VODs, highlights, and chat replay
- Broadcasting production tools: integration with OBS, Streamlabs, and others, plus co-broadcasting features (Stream Together)
- Support for PC and mobile apps and console (PS5, Xbox) apps
Revenue Model and Creator Economy
Streamers earn revenue through subscription revenue sharing (generally 50:50, with partners receiving a higher rate depending on conditions), Bits, advertising revenue, and donations. The Twitch Partner Program and Affiliate Program are the main monetization paths, and since 2022, advertising revenue sharing has been expanded and subscription revenue share ratios have been adjusted. Attempts to prevent creators from leaving the platform continue by easing multistreaming restrictions.
Cultural Impact
Twitch created new genres such as esports, speedrunning, VTubers, and Just Chatting, and formed its own culture, including "Twitch Drops," "Subathons," and "Raids." The structure in which a streamer's remarks spread in real time has also served as a channel for meme creation and public opinion formation, and real-time communication itself has taken root as a content genre.
Termination of Korean Service
In December 2023, Twitch announced that it would terminate its Korean service as of February 27, 2024, citing the burden of domestic network usage fees (interconnection costs). As a result, domestic users and streamers moved en masse to Naver's "CHZZK" (치지직) and AfreecaTV (which changed its corporate name to "SOOP" in 2024). Korea remains a representative case of a global platform withdrawing due to network cost issues.
