X
Overview
X (엑스) is the twenty-fourth letter of the Latin alphabet, a representative symbol for unknowns in mathematics, and at the same time the name of the social media platform born in 2023 when Twitter (트위터) underwent a full-scale brand overhaul. As a representative polysemous symbol used with different meanings across letters, mathematics, brands, and popular culture at large, it is interpreted in entirely different contexts depending on the field.

Origin and Characteristics of the Letter X
X derives from the Greek letter chi (Χ, chi), and corresponds to the 24th letter in the Latin alphabet. It is one of the least frequently used letters in English-speaking regions, appearing more often in the middle or end of words than at the beginning. Its pronunciation varies by position: /ks/ (box), /z/ (xylophone), /kʃ/ (anxious), and so on. In Korean, it is conventionally written as '엑스' (ekseu), and in mathematical and scientific terminology it is generally read as '엑스'.
x in Mathematics
It is known that René Descartes, in the appendix 《La Géométrie》 to his 1637 work 《Discourse on the Method》, denoted unknowns as x, y, z and knowns as a, b, c, marking the starting point of this convention. Since then, x has come to symbolize 'an unknown or varying value' throughout mathematics—as the unknown in equations, the independent variable in functions, and the horizontal axis (x-axis) of the coordinate plane. In the notation f(x), the concept of variables, and algebra education, x is the first symbol to appear, and the phrase "solve for X" has become a typical sentence form in math problems.
X (Social Media Platform)
After Elon Musk acquired Twitter for approximately 44 billion dollars in October 2022, on July 23, 2023, the blue bird logo was discarded and replaced with a black-background X logo. The domain was also switched to x.com, effectively making the name "Twitter" a thing of the past. Since then, paid verification (Blue), API monetization, advertiser exodus, and the relaxation of content moderation policies have been pursued in succession, with controversy and change continuing. Currently, X aims to go beyond a simple SNS to become a 'super app' combining payment, finance, and AI assistant functions.
X in Culture and Daily Life
- X mark (X표): A mark indicating correct and incorrect, prohibition, deletion, or ineligibility.
- Generation X (X세대): A cultural term referring to the generation born between 1965 and 1980.
- X rating (X등급): A rating label for adult or restricted content.
- X-ray (엑스레이): A name given from the meaning of radiation of unknown identity.
- Roman numeral X (로마 숫자 X): Means 10, and was widely used in Europe before Arabic numerals.
- X at the end of a letter (편지 끝의 X): A conventional notation symbolizing intimacy or a kiss.
- XXX: Used ambivalently as a marking for poison or danger, or as a label for adult content.
X's Symbolism
X simultaneously carries contradictory meanings: 'unknown', 'prohibition', 'danger', 'negation', and 'kiss'. It is rare for a single symbol to encompass such opposite sentiments, and for this reason, X is considered a choice that delivers strong impact in brand naming as well.
Latest Trends
As of 2024–2025, the X platform is in the midst of its largest structural reorganization since the acquisition. xAI's conversational AI 'Grok', founded by Musk, has been integrated into X to provide real-time post-based answer functions, and the payment and money transfer service 'X Money' has been introduced, progressing toward becoming a financial platform. Meanwhile, in Brazil and the European Union (EU), legal conflicts over content regulation and responses to disinformation have repeatedly occurred, and whether advertising revenue recovers and the issue of user attrition remain subjects of debate. At the same time, X's vast post data is drawing attention as a resource for AI training, and the balance between data utilization and privacy has emerged as a new issue. In mathematics education, curricula are being reorganized toward introducing the concepts of variables and unknowns earlier, and the symbolic status of the symbol x continues to expand.
