Wonka: I Watched It and Was Surprised It Was Scarier Than I Thought
Went to see it with my daughter, and I was the only one breaking a sweat. At first I thought it was a bright musical, but as it went on, the dystopian atmosphere got thicker and thicker.
Especially the scenes where every one of Wonka's smiles comes off as calculated—by the end, the candy shop felt like a small totalitarian society. It blends fantasy elements that remind you of The Wizard of Oz with dark, psychological tension, so it's structured in a way that adults can get more absorbed than kids.
No spoilers, but some scenes were a bit much to watch with children. If a sequel comes out, I'm going alone.

Yeah, I know that feeling too. Especially Wonka's expression got scarier and scarier.
Well, I just watched it as a family movie? There weren't any scenes that would scare the kids more.

Me too lol. My daughter says it's fun, but I got chills all over. Especially in that chocolate river scene, where Wonka laughs alone... absolutely creepy.
That's true lol. If you watch it as an adult, it's a totally different movie. The innocence of the kids feels even more frightening.
Once the next episode comes out, I guess I'll be going alone too. heh But come to think of it, the original was always kind of brutal. I feel like this is just a modern reinterpretation of that.

I saw it a bit differently. Maybe because I viewed Wonka as more innocent than calculating, I found him pitiful rather than scary. Still, I get the context of the post, and it's a bit much to bring kids along.
