Communication

Overview

Communication (疏通) refers to the process by which two or more individuals or groups exchange and share thoughts, emotions, information, opinions, and more. Definition and Importance of Communication

Etymologically, communication carries the meaning of 'being open without obstruction,' and it aims at mutual understanding and empathy. Communication contributes to the formation of individual identity and is essential for resolving social conflicts and strengthening community cohesion. Effective communication is regarded as a key factor that increases relationship satisfaction and enhances organizational productivity.

Types of Communication

Communication is broadly divided into verbal communication and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication consists of spoken and written language and is useful for conveying clear information. Nonverbal communication is expressed through facial expressions, gestures, intonation, eye contact, personal space, and so on, and plays an important role in conveying emotions and attitudes. In addition, communication can be classified according to the type of medium into face-to-face and non-face-to-face communication, and one-on-one and group communication. In particular, the spread of the internet and smartphones has created new communication channels such as text messages, email, and video conferencing.

The Process of Communication and Its Barriers

Communication occurs as a cyclical process in which a sender encodes a message and transmits it, and a receiver decodes it and provides feedback. In this process, differences in individual perception, cultural background, emotional state, and environmental noise can act as factors that hinder communication. For example, poor word choice or prejudice can distort a message. Therefore, effective communication requires skills such as active listening, clear expression, and empathetic response.

Changes in Communication Methods in Modern Society

The digital revolution has fundamentally changed the forms and speed of communication. Social network services (SNS) have blurred the boundaries between the public and the private, enabling simultaneous communication with an unspecified number of people. Emojis, emoticons, and voice messages serve to supplement emotional nuance in text-based communication. However, digital communication has also given rise to problems such as information overload, misunderstanding, cyberbullying, and privacy invasion.

Communication in Organizations and Society

Effective communication within organizations facilitates vertical and horizontal information flow, thereby improving the quality of decision-making. Horizontal communication promotes collaboration, while vertical communication is important in shaping organizational culture. At the societal level, communication functions through the public sphere as a means by which citizens exchange political opinions and reach social consensus. Transparent communication between the government and citizens is essential for maintaining the health of democracy.

Recent Trends

As of 2024, advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology are innovatively transforming the way people communicate. Generative AI chatbots and virtual assistants are making human-machine conversation routine, and real-time translation technology is lowering language barriers and facilitating global communication. In metaverse and extended reality (XR) environments, immersive interaction through avatars has become possible. At the same time, concerns about the reliability of AI-generated information and the misuse of deepfake technology are prompting discussions about the authenticity of communication.

As non-face-to-face communication became widespread after the pandemic, the 'digital well-being' movement is spreading to address side effects such as video conferencing fatigue. In addition, the inclusiveness of communication is being emphasized, and the development of highly accessible communication tools for people with disabilities and the elderly is actively underway. Companies are actively utilizing collaboration platforms such as Slack and Notion as internal communication tools and establishing an asynchronous communication culture.
