G

The seventh letter of the Latin alphabet, used as a variety of symbols across science, music, and computing.

G

Overview

G is the seventh letter of the Latin alphabet and the seventh uppercase letter to appear in the English alphabet, following A through F. It was created around the 3rd century BCE when the Romans adopted the Greek letter gamma (Γ) by way of the Etruscan alphabet; originally it was the same letter as C, but it split off when a stroke was added to distinguish the /g/ and /k/ sounds. Today, G goes beyond being a mere letter to function as a polysemous symbol throughout science, technology, and popular culture—as gravitational acceleration, as the prefix Giga, as a musical note name, and as an internet meme, among other uses.

G as a Letter

The lowercase g is famous for having the greatest difference in form between its printed and handwritten versions. The typographic lowercase g has a "double-story" structure consisting of an upper bowl and a tail descending below, whereas in handwriting the "single-story" form drawn in one stroke is common. Because of this morphological split, linguists sometimes call the lowercase g "the most difficult letter to understand," and indeed a 2018 study found that more than half of participants in a cognitive psychology experiment could not accurately draw the printed lowercase g, drawing widespread attention.

In English, G has two pronunciations: "hard g" (go, game) and "soft g" (giant, gym), and it is cited as a representative case of the irregular correspondence between spelling and pronunciation. In Korean, it is rendered as either 'ㄱ' or 'ㅈ' in the transcription of foreign words, and is usually written as 'ㄱ' at the beginning of a word.

History and Origins

G's ancestor is the Phoenician letter "gimel," and the theory that it derives from a word meaning camel is the most widely accepted. The Greeks adopted it as gamma (Γ) and used it to write the /g/ sound, while the Etruscans used it for the /k/ sound. The Romans initially used C alone to write both /k/ and /g/, but as confusion grew, around 230 BCE they added a vertical stroke to C to create G anew. Afterwards, G inserted itself into the position in the alphabet order where C should have been (the seventh position), and as a result a mismatch arose between the alphabet order and the phonological system. After the fall of the Roman Empire, G spread to Germanic- and Slavic-speaking regions and was transformed to fit each language's phonological system.

Symbols in Science and Mathematics

  • Gravitational acceleration g: The acceleration due to gravity that an object experiences at the Earth's surface, defined as approximately 9.80665 m/s². In aviation and space fields, acceleration is expressed as multiples of this value, and terms such as "3g" and "zero-g" are used in everyday speech.
  • Gravitational constant G: The constant of proportionality appearing in Newton's law of universal gravitation, approximately 6.674×10⁻¹¹ N·m²/kg². To avoid confusion with g (gravitational acceleration), it is distinguished by being uppercase.
  • Giga: An SI prefix meaning 10⁹ (one billion). It is the basic unit in specifications for digital devices, such as GB (gigabyte) and GHz (gigahertz).
  • Geometry and algebra: It is used as a conventional symbol in various contexts, including the vertices of figures, the symbol for a group in group theory, and the generating function.

Music and Culture

In music, G is the notation for a note name (sol), and it appears in keys such as G major and G minor, in the G string of the violin and guitar, and in the G line of the treble clef. In popular culture, "G" is used as a term of respect in hip-hop culture as an abbreviation of gangster ("G-style"), and it has produced derived expressions such as "G-spot" and "OG (Original Gangster)." In the United States, there is a custom of calling 1,000 dollars a "Grand" and abbreviating it to "G," and on the internet, "G" is used in game chat as an abbreviation for "good game."

Internet and Computing

Google's (Google) logo is famous as an icon shaped after the G, and the Google account login button is commonly called the "G button." In addition, G has created a brand association effect as the initial letter of the names of major services beginning with G, such as Gmail, GitHub, and GPT.

Latest Trends

In 2024–2025, along with the generative AI boom, the G of "GPT" established itself as a symbolic prefix, and the naming practice of making something look like an AI service simply by attaching "G" spread. At the same time, Google is attempting a shift from a search-centered identity to an AI-centered identity by putting its AI brand "Gemini," which makes use of the G in its logo, at the forefront. In the physics community, international collaborative research to increase the measurement precision of the gravitational constant G continues, and in 2025 a project to re-measure the value of G through next-generation optical interferometer experiments was discussed. In the fields of language and cognition, research analyzing how the morphological consistency of the lowercase g in text written by generative AI differs from human handwriting is increasing, and in educational settings the debate continues over the need to teach the double-story structure of the lowercase g in handwriting instruction. Meanwhile, as seen in the names of 5G and 6G mobile communications, "G" has also become firmly established as the standard symbol for distinguishing technology generations, serving as a suffix indicating Generation.
