Hulk
Overview
Hulk is a flagship superhero character introduced by Marvel Comics in 1962 through The Incredible Hulk #1. Dr. Bruce Banner, a radiation scientist, is transformed by a gamma-ray accident into a giant green monster whenever he becomes angry or excited; his creators are Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Though outwardly a destructive monster, he embodies the duality of a wounded human within, and has become an icon symbolizing the theme of 'anger and control' in popular culture.
Main Content
Origin and Setting
Bruce Banner is an American nuclear physicist; while experimenting with a gamma bomb, he is directly exposed to gamma rays while trying to save a civilian boy. As a result, when anger or stress reaches a critical point, his body expands, his muscles enlarge, and his skin turns green, transforming him into the Hulk. During transformation, his intelligence and ego change dramatically, and in the original comics his multiple-personality-like traits—'Savage Hulk,' 'Gray Hulk,' 'Professor Hulk,' 'Devil Hulk,' etc.—differ by period.
Abilities and Characteristics
- Superhuman strength: Monstrous strength enough to lift planets, and as his anger grows, his power rises almost infinitely.
- Durability and regeneration: He withstands gunfire, explosions, and even nuclear weapons, and his wounds heal rapidly.
- Jumping ability: He travels by leaping several kilometers.
- Gamma-ray immunity: He has strong resistance to radiation, toxins, and disease.
Media Appearances
The Hulk, who began in comics in 1962, went through the 1977 CBS drama The Incredible Hulk, and in the 2008 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film The Incredible Hulk, he was played by Edward Norton. Afterwards, from the Avengers series onward, Mark Ruffalo took over the role and served as a core member of the MCU. He also expanded widely into animation, games, theme park attractions, and more.
Major Storylines
World War Hulk, Planet Hulk, Hulk: Future Imperfect, etc. are considered representative works showing the narrative peak of the Hulk's anger, alienation, and salvation. In particular, World War Hulk is a revenge story that unfolds after the Illuminati exile the Hulk into space, maximizing the character's tragic nature.
Recent Developments
As of 2024–2025, in the MCU, the Hulk has evolved beyond a simple combat agent into a 'Smart Hulk,' and gamma-related narratives are expanding. In She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and the film Captain America: Brave New World, plot threads related to the Hulk's adversary 'the Leader' and Gamma World are being paid off, opening a new phase. In addition, there are continuing reports that Marvel is considering a live-action film adaptation of World War Hulk as a long-term plan, and speculation has been raised that director Rhea Perry (리아 페리) will direct. In the gaming field, Marvel-based open-world and action games featuring the Hulk are steadily being released, and in the comics, the original worldview continues to expand, with new Hulk hosts and Gamma species settings being reestablished.
