KDA
Overview
KDA is an abbreviation for Kill, Death, and Assist in games, and is a metric that quantifies a player's combat contribution. It is mainly used in team-based competitive games such as MOBA, FPS, and AOS, and is utilized to evaluate an individual's performance beyond simple wins and losses. KDA has established itself as an important reference metric in game communities and esports analysis.
Key Details
Definition and Origin
KDA developed as the K/D (kill/death) ratio came into use in FPS games from the early 2000s. Later, as MOBA games such as League of Legends gained popularity, the concept of assists was added, expanding into KDA. KDA is a representative metric indicating contribution in team fights, and is evaluated as reflecting teamwork rather than merely the number of kills.
Calculation Method
Generally, KDA is calculated as (Kills + Assists) / Deaths. If deaths are 0, it is denoted as infinity (∞), or the death count is adjusted to 1. For example, with 5 kills, 2 deaths, and 10 assists, (5+10)/2 = 7.5 KDA. Depending on the game, there are variations that use only K/D excluding assists, or that assign weights to assists. Some games use other metrics such as 'combat contribution' or 'damage dealt' alongside KDA.
Applications
KDA is actively used in esports player evaluation, game matchmaking systems, personal broadcasts, and communities. In professional leagues, KDA is used as basic data for gauging a player's form, but because there are many cases in which a player contributes to victory despite a low KDA depending on team strategy or position, it is difficult to view it as an absolute standard. For support players, KDA tends to be high because they have many assists.
Limitations and Criticism
KDA is criticized as an overly simplified metric. Cases can arise in which players make reckless plays for kills or sacrifice teamwork for assists. In addition, there are many contributions not reflected in KDA, such as securing objectives, vision control, and lane management, so it is insufficient for evaluating overall skill. Recently, the trend is to analyze damage dealt, vision score, gold earned, and other factors in combination with KDA.
Latest Trends
As of 2024-2025, KDA is still used as the basis of game metrics, but increasingly sophisticated analytical metrics are emerging. In League of Legends esports, objective participation rate, vision score, and laning index are evaluated together under the concept of 'KDA+α'. In addition, with the introduction of AI-based match analysis systems, services that visualize various data, including KDA, in real time are increasing. In mobile games and the battle royale genre, there is also a tendency to value survival time and ranking more than KDA. Meanwhile, to avoid confusion with K/DA (a virtual K-pop group), the practice of writing KDA in uppercase has become established in game communities.
