Geography and Administration

Xi'an is located inland in China, in the Guanzhong Plain in the central part of Shaanxi Province. It is bordered by the Wei River (渭河) to the north and the Qinling Mountains (秦嶺) to the south. Administratively, it comprises 11 districts and 2 counties, and the Xi'an Municipal People's Government is in Weiyang District (未央區). The area is about 10,752 square kilometers, and the terrain is relatively flat, with an elevation of about 400 meters above sea level.

History

Xi'an's history began in the 11th century BCE when King Wen of Zhou founded Fengjing (豊京). Later, Qin Shi Huang called the area Xianyang and made it the capital of China's first unified empire. Under the Han dynasty, Chang'an prospered as the largest city in East Asia. During the Tang dynasty it was an international city with a population of more than one million, visited by envoys from Silla and Japan. After the late Tang period, Xi'an lost its status as a capital but remained a walled city through the Ming and Qing dynasties; after 1949, it developed into a modern city with the construction of new urban districts.

Culture and Tourism

Xi'an is a treasure house of world-class cultural heritage. The most representative site is the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor and the Terracotta Army, which are registered as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage and called one of the 'Eighth Wonder of the World'. The Xi'an City Wall, built during the Ming and Qing dynasties, is very well preserved and famous as a cycling destination. The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, and the Muslim Quarter are places where tradition and Islamic culture coexist, attracting many tourists. Xi'an also has many local theaters and art museums that carry on ancient Chinese poetry and the cultural arts of the post-Tang period.

Economy and Industry

Thanks to the Western Development strategy of recent years, Xi'an has achieved rapid economic growth. Textiles and machinery manufacturing were the traditional mainstays, whereas today high-tech industries such as aerospace, semiconductors, new energy, and biotechnology play a major role. The state-level Xi'an High-tech Industrial Development Zone is one of the fastest-growing high-tech clusters in China. As a key node of the Belt and Road Initiative, Xi'an is also expanding its logistics, finance, and international trade functions.

Transportation

Xi'an is an inland transportation hub. Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) is regarded as one of Asia's major hub airports. High-speed rail connects it to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and other major cities, and it is one of the departure points for China–Europe railway routes crossing the Eurasian continent. The city operates eight subway lines, efficiently connecting densely populated areas.

Education and Research

Xi'an has many excellent institutions of higher education and is often called the educational capital of western China. Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xidian University, and Northwestern Polytechnical University are among the country's leading universities, cultivating scientific and technological talent. National research institutes and corporate R&D centers are concentrated here, and active research is conducted in artificial intelligence and semiconductors. Xi'an also offers many scholarship programs for international students and is particularly favored by students from Central Asian countries.

Recent Developments

Since 2024, Xi'an has been accelerating the creation of a smart city. It is introducing AI-based traffic management systems and expanding the digital trade platform of the Xi'an Gangsheng Free Trade Zone. In 2025, quantum computing research achievements were announced, centered on the Xi'an Jiaotong University Innovation Center, and investment in advanced science and technology continues. In cultural tourism, the Terracotta Army Museum has begun augmented reality (AR) guide services, and nighttime tourism content around the Ming–Qing city wall has greatly expanded; tourism revenue is reported to have increased by more than 20% year-on-year. Meanwhile, Xi'an has been listed in the Media Arts category of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, focusing on city branding through the combination of contemporary culture and traditional heritage.
