Honest 6-Month Review of a Government-Funded Bootcamp (Must Read Before Enrolling)

I completed a government-funded backend course last year. I’m now working at a small to medium-sized company. There are a lot of reviews that sugarcoat things, so I’ll just write what I actually experienced.

  • Instructors are a real gamble. It was the same institution but a different class, and the quality was worlds apart.
  • The curriculum is generally shallow. They do go as far as Spring, but they just move through the material. You have to review on your own.
  • Job support is more like “connecting” you than “guaranteeing” anything. It varies by institution, but most mainly refer you to partner companies.
  • Team projects are practically everything. What you did there can be considered your entire portfolio.

Even so, I think it’s not a bad choice for non-majors. It’s better than self-studying alone and losing direction. That said, never believe the line “6 months and you’ll get a job.” I prepared for 3 more months after finishing.

Agreed—the instructor lottery is a real gamble lol. I wasted three months at the same institution because I got placed in the wrong class. You should definitely check instructor reviews before signing up.

But I'm not so sure about the whole 'it's not bad for non-CS majors' thing. These days there are so many government-funded bootcamp grads that their portfolios all look the same, and honestly, the fact that you can prep for 6+3 months and land an SME job feels more like the reality of this market. You might actually be better off spending that time going all in on one side project instead of an academy.
